#atozchallenge: Z is for Zabriske…

So, it’s the final post in this year’s #atozchallenge, bringing us to the end of my hastily thrown together B to Z of Twin Peaks and the letter that so often presents a problem in these alphabetical lists, Z.

But not today.

Grace Zabriske plays Laura’s mother, Sarah Palmer, a woman whose life begins to come apart at the seams long before we meet her in the first episode (see also; Fire Walk With Me) and whose default state fluctuates between this…

…and this…

…for the entire series.
So I thought it only fair that she was wrapped in the warm and loving embrace of a Woolhouse Boys sweater.

Ahh, she looks better already.

#atozchallenge: Z is for Zabriske.

#atozchallenge: Y is for Yankees…

For the Y post in the #atozchallenge, I’m pushing my luck again, to crowbar another daft subplot into the B to Z of Twin Peaks.

After living a life of venal ambition and greed, culminating in events so traumatic they prompt a mental breakdown, Benjamin Horne becomes convinced he’s a civil war general.

Yes, he actually thinks he’s in the southern army, fighting against the Yankees, only this time the South is winning and this entire unhinged fantasy takes place in Horne’s office at the Great Northern Hotel.

Hippy psychiatrist, Dr Jacoby enlists the help of Bobby Briggs and Ben’s daughter, Audrey Horne to reenact parts of his delusion, in order to help him regain his sanity.

Here’s a short clip of the surreal role-play therapy in action; take it away boys…

And here’s Ben in typically dramatic pose, flying the flag for The Woolhouse Boys.

#atozchallenge: X is for X-Files…

Once again giving new meaning to the word “tenuous”, the #atozchallenge reaches X in my B to Z of Twin Peaks, by way of the fact that one of the characters was (and will be) played by an actor who went on to star in that other paranormal/FBI show, The X-Files.

In his tv debut, David Duchovny plays DEA agent Dennis Bryson, called in by the FBI to help in the investigation. But when he arrives in Twin Peaks, the small town has a surprise in store.

Here is Dennis’s introduction.

I meant Denise, sorry.

#atozchallenge: W is for Waldo…

I think it’s only fair that non-humans should get a mention in the #atozchallenge, (no, not giants, owls and magical dwarves) so for the W in my B to Z of Twin Peaks, I’m picking another minor character with a small but crucial part in the story.

Waldo is a minah bird who may or may not have witnessed Laura Palmer’s murder.

Given a minah’s uncanny ability to mimic the human voice, often repeating words and phrases picked up from people around them, Cooper wanted to see what he had to say for himself.

So they take him to the sheriff’s station and under Doctor Haywood‘s supervision, feed him grapes until he starts to sing like a canary (if you know what I mean).

Incidentally, Doc Haywood is played by another candidate for the W spot, the late Warren Frost, father of Twin Peaks co-creator, Mark Frost.

In the veterinarian’s office where the police are searching for Waldo’s owner, one of the classic comic moments from the series occurs. It’s only tiny, not even a gag really, just a Lynchian moment of silliness, but it features another scene-stealing animal, which is all the excuse I need to include it here.

#atozchallenge: V is for Vibraphone…

It’s time for some music on the #atozchallenge, because I couldn’t do a B to Z of Twin Peaks without including Angelo Badalamenti, the multi-instrumentalist composer whose soundtrack gives the show it’s distinctive atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the B post was already taken by King Tuck himself, Billy Zane, so I’ve had to include Angelo by way of one his trademark sounds, the Vibraphone.

To this end, I bring you something of an exclusive; I have tracked down (pun intended, obviously) a vibraphone only version of Audrey Horne‘s languorous and “too dreamy” theme, Freshly Squeezed, from an extensive archive of Badalamenti/Lynch tunes from Twin Peaks and other projects.

To enable me to share it with you, I have uploaded it to YouTube, as the soundtrack to an Audrey photo montage.

So here, for your viewing and listening pleasure, is one minute forty two seconds of cool jazz, with Angelo on vibes and Audrey on virginal smouldering.

Niiiiice.

#atozchallenge: U is for Umbrellas…

Ok, I admit it, the “U” post in this year’s #atozchallenge has got me stumped, so I’m having to really scrape the most tenuous link from the bottom of of my B to Z of Twin Peaks barrel.

But I found something.

After rejecting Undercover as being too generic, (despite Dale and Ed’s excursion as a pair of vacationing “oral surgeons”) and Uncle (which is what Maddy Ferguson called Leland Palmer) because, well, that’s just a bit too tenuous, even by my standards, I decided the best I could do was Umbrellas.

Why umbrellas, you ask?

Because, during the Miss Twin Peaks beauty pageant, the town’s prospective beauty queens perform a dance routine with, you guessed it, twirling umbrellas.

(Thanks to Christian Hartleben for help sourcing a decent screen shot)

As a bonus and because I’ve already made the link to Miss Twin Peaks, here’s a minor subplot character, Lana Budding-Milford, played by Robyn Lively, performing a dance of “contortionistic jazz exotica”, whatever that is.

#atozchallenge: T is for Teresa and Thomas…

The final full week of this year’s #atozchallenge starts off with another double header in my B to Z of Twin Peaks, taking one character from each end of the story so far, chronologically speaking.

Teresa Banks only appears in the prequel movie, Fire Walk With Me, but she is the reason Special Agent Dale Cooper comes to Twin Peaks in the first place.
Cooper is convinced Teresa and Laura Palmer are both victims of the same killer and thinks his insights into the mind of Teresa’s murderer will helps direct his investigation, while searching for Laura’s.

Thomas Eckhardt, on the other hand, doesn’t arrive in town until the second half of season two and his appearance sets off a chain of events that we will only really find out the full extent of when the show returns, in a little less than a month’s time.

Eckhardt is a South African tycoon who was in business with Andrew Packard, before Andrew’s mysterious death in a boating accident. He comes to Twin Peaks in search of his “property”, Josie Packard, whom he claims to have rescued from a life of poverty on the streets of Hong Kong.

Here he is, sporting a rather fetching Woolhouse Boys scarf.
