K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge.

K’lee left us with our weekly dose of inspiration for K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge on Friday, choosing an illuminating subject to play with; Living in the light.

Straight away it occurred to me that I had a candidate for that concept, having visited a local church last weekend with Audrey, during the annual Pilton Green Man festival.

We went to see a friend of mine performing a musical set inspired by Hitchhikers’ Guide To The Galaxy, featuring extracts from the book and other space-themed tunes (see video clip below) and I snapped a couple of stained glass windows while we were there.

K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge.

I’m at the helm of this week’s K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge post, having asked you to get Up close and personal for your weekend’s homework.

As usual I had nothing specific in mind when I set the theme, deciding to search outside for inspiration and it didn’t take long to arrive.

I was sitting having a coffee in the sunshine yesterday morning and noticed a few seed pods on the table, from one of the many trees which overhang the back of our garden, like this one…

…which isn’t unusual, so I didn’t pay it any attention, although there was something slightly different about this particular seed.

Again, nothing all that unusual, certainly not worth investigating any more closely…until it moved.

On its own.

I was also playing with some new editing apps at the weekend and I made this rather effective image, bringing all the flower borders in very close indeed, to form a lush little “garden planet”.

K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge.

Today’s post is more about artistic interpretation than photographic precision, with K’lee in the driving seat for this week’s edition of K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge, leaving us the esoteric prompt of; If you could see into the heart of me.

Well, it was obvious to me that this would have to feature my family; Rhonda and I met in person for the first time almost exactly five years ago and, next week, she and Audrey will make their first trip back to America since they moved over here.

They are both very excited at the prospect of catching up with friends and family, especially meeting their first grandson/nephew for the first time, a visit delayed for over a year by financial constraints and intractable bureaucracy. It will also be the first time we’ve been apart as a family for five years, so they will of course be very much in my thoughts for the three weeks they’re away.

That seems like a lot of firsts for today, but it would hardly be a first to just post photos of my family, so I thought outside the box (well, outside in the garden) and made a little stop frame animated gif to illustrate K’lee’s theme as literally as possible, painstakingly constructing it from just two photos and a heart sticker.

K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge.

I set the theme for this week’s edition of K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge, asking you to get out among the public and do some; Street photography.

I’m choosing to include all public places in my interpretation of that term, focusing on candid, un-posed photos of people enjoying an afternoon drink in the sunshine of a pub garden. This kind of picture seems to capture a millisecond of life far better than any expensive, stiffly formal family portrait ever could and that’s what makes them so fascinating, I think.

I decided to go with all black and white images for this week’s post, with a little bit of extra digital fiddling for effect.

Cosmic Photo prompt.

For this week’s nudge in the general direction of inspiration, it’s my turn to give K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge its theme and I’ve chosen to repeat a prompt we’ve had before: Street photography.

That gives you almost unlimited scope; whether you capture something candid and spontaneous in the city centre, snap a weed growing between paving slabs in a tiny village, or click your camera at a comatose commuter on the train.

K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge.

Today’s edition of K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge is brought to you by K’lee and his prompt; State of independence.

Clearly inspired by the fact that Thursday is July 4th and Independence Day across the pond, I chose to once again utilise Audrey as my model and transform her into an American icon.

It also seems fitting, as she is about to embark on the Big Adventure at a new school in September and is rapidly becoming a confident and independent young lady.

So, with a couple of homemade accessories, I made her into Lady Liberty for the day and I think you’ll agree she carries it off rather well.

Some cardboard, scissors and tape was all I needed to produce a crown and torch…

…to give the proper gravitas to my human statue.

Then, with a little editing magic, I placed her in Instow, to guard the entrance to the harbour.

After that, I got artistic and created these two artworks on the same theme.

K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge.

For today’s visual adventure on K’lee and Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge, I asked you to show us some interesting buildings and I found a few at the weekend so I’ll show you mine if you’ll show me yours.

First, the imposing facade of Heanton Court, the pub and restaurant Audrey and I rode to on Saturday, along the Tarka Trail cycle path, for a spot of lunch.

Next, on the way home we explored the wooded borders of the riverside trail and discovered an overgrown stone building…

…which on closer inspection, turned out to be an old lime kiln.

Returning to Barnstaple along the river, I snapped two more, distinctly different styles of architecture; this old Victorian building complete with intact dovecote on the roof…

…and the sleek art deco lines of this old cinema (now a nightclub) , gleaming white in the sunshine.

Onwards to the town square and the “Three faced liar”, officially the Albert Memorial clock tower, but known by its nickname to locals due to three of the four clock faces consistently showing the wrong time.

As a bonus, I captured the newly updated graffiti mural under the tall concrete bridge on the river; Audrey loved the fire-breathing tiger.

And last week, Rhonda, Audrey and I set off on an early morning drive to central London, to renew Audrey’s passport at the hugely impressive new American Embassy in Vauxhall, so of course I snapped a couple of shots there, too.
