One liner Wednesday…

1linerwedsbadgewes.jpgToday’s portmanteau proverbs are bad news for horticultural haberdashers and rather fortunate for Mick Jagger and friends…

“You can’t make a moss purse.”

but;

“A sow gathers no silk from a Rolling Stone’s ear.”

One liner Wednesday…

1linerwedsbadgewes.jpgProverbs have always been useful reminders of how we should live our lives, but when you mix them together, they don’t necessarily provide very sensible advice.

For instance:

“Don’t be merry to spite your face.”

or;

“Eat, drink and cut off your nose, for tomorrow we die.”

Don’t try this at home.

One liner Wednesday…

1linerwedsbadgewes.jpgNot all proverbs make a lot of sense when you combine them, but sometimes the image they bring to mind is too amusing to resist:

Granted, “Bread always sings” isn’t anything special, but then;

“It ain’t over til the fat lady falls butter side down.”

One liner Wednesday…

1linerwedsbadgewes.jpgThe cryptic concatenation of pithy proverbs can throw up some sound advice and, with Easter coming up, there can be none sounder than; “Don’t throw eggs”, although the flip side of that pairing is; “Don’t teach your grandmother to suck the baby out with the bath water.”

Wise words, indeed.

Following on from last week’s composite proverb, another combination of aphoristic axioms springs to mind:

“Faith can move mountains, so if the mountain won’t come to Mohammed, someone needs to have more faith, that’s all I’m saying.”

Brevity is the metaphysical, indefinable, eternal and undying essence of intellectually stimulating and humorous observational interpretation.
