Art for blog’s sake…

13 Sep

Although I try to create the majority of the photography and graphics for the blog, (with the exception of things like film stills, original posters etc) my artistic skills desert me as soon as I put pencil to paper when drawing is involved.
So occasionally I have to resort to clip art from the Big ol’ Internet to illustrate my posts.

This has always been a source of frustration to me, (not the clip art, I’m very grateful for that, it’s just that it would be nice to have something that was unique to Diary of an Internet Nobody but which is beyond my abilities to create) so I have taken the plunge and engaged the services of an “artist in residence”, namely my good friend Ho, who has been a talented (but modest) amateur cartoonist for as long as I’ve known him, a little over thirty years.

I have featured Ho’s work before, on posters for the various theatrical shows we put on together in our youth, along with the fabulous team t-shirt designs he does each year for our regular charity fundraiser, the Rotary Startrek night hike.

The challenge that I’ve set him is to come up with one, or possibly more, of his own particular style of comical cartoons, at short notice, whenever I need a picture to illustrate or enhance a blog post.

That’s all. (says Mr Artistic-ten-thumbs)

To give you an idea of what to expect, I’ve asked him to supply some examples of his earlier work.

Here is a small selection of old favourites…

Here are a couple that he designed for shows by one of his own projects, Wild Rumpus children’s theatre company…

..some Christmas cards,

a book club magazine…

Ho also drew a set of illustrations for a sadly unpublished children’s story by none other than author (and our old English and Drama teacher), the inspirational Jeffery A Lee.

These are few early pictures from Ho’s archives that he recently unearthed from his mum’s house…

…and my own personal favourite, an old, slightly foxed picture that I see something new in each time.

So now you know what you have to look forward to, I will be featuring an all new, bespoke Diary of an Internet Nobody exclusive picture by Ho in my next guest post for Ramblings of a Semi-Mad Man, coming soon.

Watch this space…

Dale, I freaking LOVE his illustrations! They’re awesome, man! And such a wide variety! I think my favorites are the children’s stories and the one of the turkey – HA!

Please tell your friend, Ho, that I think he is very talented!

And I’m looking forward to your upcoming guest post!

    Have a super weekend!

I’m so glad you like them Ron. I’ll pass on your kind words but I expect he’ll see them himself, as he regularly checks in on the blog.
I’m excited to have him aboard, his drawings will add another individual slant to Diary of an Internet Nobody.
