Shoot the band…

10 Feb

As I’ve probably mentioned before, I’m a rabid music fan, and there’s nothing I like more than a good gig or a festival.

Fun Lovin Criminals at Chagstock last year.

Over the years I’ve known many bands, lived with various musicians, lugged gear in and out of venues, and taken money on the door at pub gigs, all enabling me to soak up the vicarious thrill of being part of the live music experience.

(Without any appreciable musical ability of my own, my only active participation in music has been playing the trumpet as a teenager and providing bongo accompaniment for guitar-playing friends)

However, one thing that I have been able to do is document these events in pictures, initially with simple photographs, and more recently I’ve experimented with effects, filters, and general mucking about, to try and achieve more artistic results.

I find the most successful shots are taken at smaller venues such as pubs, clubs, and local festivals, where you don’t always end up with stick figures in the far distance, and the backs of ten thousand heads filing the foreground.

When I lived in Sussex, someone we used to go and see play regularly was singer/songwriter/troubadour Tom Palmer, and he, amongst others, set up the Gathering of Friends, a small family-oriented festival featuring local bands that played in the area.

A perfect example of a picture reflecting the mood of the moment, this snap always brings it all back to me like it was yesterday…

…and fifteen years, and 300 miles away, we now have a similar atmosphere at the wonderful Chagstock festival.

We have been getting out to see a good few bands recently, and there is quite a variety of musical styles to choose from.
Whether it’s the heavy blues and classic rock of The Roughnecks or Badabing, the spiky Indie swagger of Captal, good time ’80s covers from Spaced Invaders, or the gypsy guitars and French accordion café music of Gypfunk or The Mighty Manouche, there’s pretty much something for all tastes in our thriving local music scene…
